What is a Worsener?, you ask. Have you ever had an idea that just made too much since, only to share it, build support, and have it blocked by the middle manager who fights viciously to maintain the status quo?

Or what about the frontline operator who has been in their role for decades and knows every possible technique to deny changes to their work area, including “we already tried that and it didn’t work”, “if it was a good idea, we would already be doing it”, and of course, “it will never work because of the guy on second shift”.

I’ll give you one more example. Have you run into the lady who creates processes so cumbersome and bureaucratic that any change, especially improvement, is impossible to get approved. The endless paperwork, unavailable support, and fear of retaliation for not following the process perfectly scares everyone away.

These people are Worseners. They use their knowledge, pessimism, fear of change, and political acumen to ensure that nothing changes – thus retaining their undeserved status in the organization. Can they be converted into Impruvers? Possibly, but at what cost; and is it worth it!

An Impruver is someone who makes things better with time. A Worsener either maintains the status quo or makes things worse with time. Worseners are everywhere – but the best place for them to be is working for your competitor.
